U of Alabama cancels commencem

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - The University of Alabama has canceled students' final exams and postponed commencement ceremonies for graduating students in the wake of devastating storms that killed dozens across the state.

Some of the worst damage was in Tuscaloosa, where the university is located.

The school announced both moves in an email and text message to students on Thursday. Students can either accept their current grades for the semester or take them later on a date to be determined by faculty.

Meanwhile, the commencement was pushed back from May 7 to Aug. 6. The commencement is typically held in the basketball arena for some 4,000 students.

The storms that rolled through Wednesday flattened homes and businesses and killed at least 250 people in six states.
